FIRE PREVENTION & SAFETY
Preventing Fires, Protecting our Community.
Fire safety isn’t just about responding to emergencies—it’s about preventing them before they start. The Micro Fire Department is committed to helping residents and businesses in North Carolina reduce fire risks through education, prevention, and preparedness. Implementing fire safety measures not only protects lives and property but also helps improve the ISO (Insurance Services Office) fire rating, which can lower insurance costs for homeowners and businesses in our community.

Fire Safety Tips For Homes
Smoke Alarms & Fire Detection Systems
- Install smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home.
- Test alarms monthly and replace batteries annually or when low.
- Replace smoke alarms every 10 years as recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
- Consider interconnected smoke alarms, so when one sounds, they all do.
- Install carbon monoxide detectors if your home has gas appliances, fireplaces, or generators.
Fire Escape Planning & Drills
- Create a home fire escape plan with two exits from every room.
- Practice fire drills twice a year with your family.
- Ensure house numbers are visible from the street for emergency responders.
- Teach children how to escape on their own in case adults can’t help.
Cooking Safety
- Never leave food unattended while cooking, especially on the stovetop.
- Keep flammable items, such as dish towels and curtains, away from burners.
- If a grease fire starts, turn off the burner and cover the flames with a lid—never use water.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and learn how to use it properly.
Heating & Electrical Safety
- Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable objects.
- Plug space heaters directly into the wall—never use extension cords.
- Have chimneys cleaned and inspected annually before using fireplaces.
- Never overload electrical outlets or power strips.
- Replace frayed or damaged electrical cords immediately.
Outdoor Burning & Wildfire Prevention
- Check local burn bans and regulations before burning yard debris.
- Keep outdoor fires at least 50 feet from structures and have a water source nearby.
- Never burn on windy days, as fires can spread rapidly.
- Clear dry leaves and brush around your home to reduce wildfire risk.
Fire Safety for Businesses
To comply with North Carolina Fire Code (NCFC) and improve ISO fire ratings, businesses should:
- Post emergency exit maps and ensure exit doors remain unobstructed
- Conduct annual fire extinguisher inspections and train employees on proper use
- Install and maintain fire alarms and sprinkler systems where required
- Store flammable materials properly and away from ignition sources
- Schedule routine fire drills and safety training for employees
